Child and youth welfare has the legal mandate to counsel and support parents and other legal guardians with child-raising, to support young people in their individual and social development and to protect them against risks to their well-being. These are teams of mental health care professionals who work with people in severe distress. There is a lot of evidence that talking therapies can be effective for children and young people, but medication may also help in some cases. Treatment for children and young people often involves discussing the problem to work out the best way to tackle it.

If you would rather speak to someone you do not know, try talking to your school counsellor or local doctor. Parents will find useful information on how to help their child in the pre-teens’ section of The Raising Children Network website . Your conversations with them are private and they will be able to direct you to further support if you need it.

You can use our Helpline service if you are the parent or main carer of a child or young person aged 25 or under.
